An artificial cherry tree that flowers throughout the year becomes a poetic metaphor examining the relationship between nature and artificiality – a topic repeatedly debated in regions characterized by tourism.

Project description

A reproduction of a flowering cherry tree, true to nature, was intended to remain for a full year on the field between the Hofburg, the Museum of Folk Art, and the State Theatre.1 Initially, it had amazed many passers-by already; in spring, however, it would attract less attention and only lead to irritation again in autumn at the latest, heightening into the mystical-theatrical in winter, when everything would be covered in snow. Although less celebrated in Tyrol than elsewhere, blossoming fruit trees are a sign of spring here, too. To “freeze” – like a video still, as it were – the few days that a tree bears blossom and extend them into a full year is a poetic metaphor examining the relationship of nature and artificiality – a permanent topic of contemporary debate, particularly in a tourist region.

  1. Due to the start of construction on the Haus der Musik, the installation could not be maintained throughout the seasons and had to be removed after seven months.
